Motors currently being used by this company are premium grade (IE3), which is the highest efficiency in Korea, and the efficiency depends on the power consumption.
77~96% is not bad, but when the motor and fan are combined, the energy efficiency of the finished product drops sharply to the 20~30% range.
While Korea's regulations are not strong, Europe has been regulating the energy efficiency of fan-motor combination products complying with energy-related product (ErP) regulation since 2015. The efficiency of the motor combination product was also increased from 40% to 50%.
Korea also plans to strengthen the standard for three-phase induction motor efficiency to conform to IE4 from the year 2026 on.
It is expected the efficiency will increase in development, manufacturing, and use of EC Fan-motors. Although the Korean market is small compared to advanced countries such as the United States and Europe, data-centre projects are rapidly on the rise recently. As the number of cases is increasing, the market is showing signs of expansion.
In addition, as energy saving has recently become a hot topic, efficient operation of equipment is becoming more important. As the need for premium fan-motors increases, the importance of EC motors with speed control and automatic control functions is emerging.
Recently, some SMEs in Korea such as Solar Electric have developed their own EC Motors and are pursuing to use them. Fan manufacturers are also spurring the development of EC Fan-motors, but they are lacking in technology and experience compared to global competitors. For this reason, the company wants to acquire from with partners who have EC Fan-Motor technology.

EC motors are based on the idea of using electronic commutation (EC) instead of conventional carbon brush commutation for DC motors. As the operating principle is based on that of a DC motor, EC motors are also called brushless DC (BLDC) motors. These motors are generally used in low power ranges of a few hundred watts.
